ABout Jean

Jean Andre Antoine (b. 1983, Harlem) is an analog street photographer based in New York City. He works daily from his “office” on the corner of Prince and Broadway capturing portraits of passersby with a Crown Graphic press camera and a finite supply of vintage film. He is an exhibiting artist of instant and 35mm film, mixed media and portrait studio installations. His commercial work includes projects for Nike and Tiffany & Co.

Who do you consider the most influential black photographer?
In general, James Van Der Zee for the way he represented Harlem. Personally, Louis Mendes.

Which field of photography is the most diverse? Least diverse?
I think that the field of photography this is most diverse is probably portrait and street photography. Just because of the developments in technology throughout the last few decades which has widened the accessibility to photography. Anyone can take photograph just by a click of a button on their phone.

What do you consider the biggest hurdle for Black photographers today?
Making art for arts sake.
