About Karen
After graduating in 2008, Karen embarked on a quest for travel, adventure, and boundless creative freedom, only to collide with the harsh realities of the photo industry. Her journey was marred by an imbalance between work and life, low pay, extreme stress, lack of career advancement, and a maddening lack of transparency and stability. Burnout was a constant companion as she struggled to build a portfolio that felt like a ticket to nowhere.
Determined to change the narrative, she launched Black Visual Queen, a business born from her frustrations with the industry's injustices, including blatant racism, lack of diversity, nonexistent mentorship, and instability. Black Visual Queen is more than just a business; it's a beacon of hope and guidance for budding photographers and creatives navigating this challenging field.
Karen’s once-small dream has flourished into a reality beyond her expectations. Over 15 years, she hopped through 14 companies, secured contracts with billion-dollar brands, and now dedicates her time to sharing her knowledge, struggles, and triumphs.
