About Sarahbeth

Sarahbeth Maney also known as SB, is a staff photojournalist at The Detroit Free Press and Vice President of The Michigan Press Photographers Association (MPPA). She previously covered national politics at The New York Times's Washington bureau as a 2021-22 photography fellow. In 2022, Maney became the first photographer to receive the National Association of Black Journalists Michael J. Feeney Emerging Journalist of the Year Award.

Originally from the California Bay Area, her personal work focuses on housing inequality, education, disability, and social issues that disproportionately impact Black and brown communities. As a journalist, her goal is to further representation within the industry and portray each story as honestly as it exists.

Maney received a bachelor's degree in photojournalism from San Francisco State University in 2019, where she also served as The National Press Photographers Association chapter president. Maney has held internships at The San Francisco Chronicle, The Flint Journal in Michigan and S.F. Examiner.

In 2020, she received a grant from the Pulitzer Center and Diversify Photo to continue documenting an intimate photo story about pregnancy and housing insecurity during the coronavirus pandemic in San Francisco.

Most recently, she covered the confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to join the U.S. Supreme Court. While working for The New York Times, Maney captured what is now being called "the most iconic image" of the hearings. She shared about her experience after the photograph sparked worldwide conversations about the need for representation of Black women and women of color within the field of photojournalism.

Maney's work has also appeared in National Geographic, TIME, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Teen Vogue, Oprah Daily, Vanity Fair, CNN, The Guardian, HuffPost, Bloomberg, Forbes, among others.
