About Tara
Tara Pixley, Ph.D., is a photographer and professor with a 20-year career in visual journalism. Dr. Pixley is based in Los Angeles, where she teaches journalism and media studies at Loyola Marymount University.
Her writing and photography have appeared in various publications including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, NPR, Newsweek, ProPublica, HuffPost, Nieman Reports, ESPN Magazine, CanonPro, and the Black Scholar.
She is a co-founder and Board Member of Authority Collective — an organization dedicated to diversifying perspectives in visual media and she is currently working on a book chronicling the move to decolonize the visual journalism industry.

Roy de Carava and Carrie Mae Weems historically.
Which field of photography is the most diverse? Least diverse?
Hard to say but I think photojournalism and commercial photography are likely the least diverse and editorial/portrait photography is more likely to have Black and brown photographers.
What do you consider the biggest hurdle for Black photographers today?
Gaining the level of mentorship, education, and core knowledge/skills necessary
for a long and prosperous career.
